Holistic Eating Doesn’t Have to Cost You Your Whole Paycheck

Grocery coupons and sales are not exclusively for junk food! Sorry to break the news to those who actually believe this.  You can certainly find deals and coupons on organic and healthy foods in the organic section of your local grocery store, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and online outlets (such as localharvest.com, Amazon.com, and organicmall.com to name a few).

Many of us most likely made a New Year resolution to eat healthy and holistically. You don’t have to give away your whole paycheck for this. Checkout Whole Foods for example! Whole Foods is expensive and is not a grocery stop for many. When you think of Whole Foods, you think of whole paycheck. You probably do not want to do your entire grocery shopping at Whole Foods, but you can certainly pick up some great deals for the things you actually need and want.

New Year’s Resolution: Cleaning Out the Kitchen

As much as we try to use tote bags for everyday errands and groceries, those small plastic shopping bags always seem to collect in the bottom drawers of the kitchen. They are useful for the smaller trash cans around the house, which provides a great way to save on garbage bag costs.  While cleaning my kitchen the other day, I discovered a bottom drawer burgeoning with plastic bags that needed some serious attention. I recalled a contraption my mother has fixed to her pantry door that corals and dispenses old plastic bags, but I knew there was an easier way to store these pesky baggies without breaking out my power drill. Additionally, I discovered the cost of one of the dispensers could range from $6-$26, depending on the distributor. Determined to spend nothing, I lent from an article in Real Simple from a few months back, which suggested the use of an old tissue box.  The tissue box, which fits conveniently in my bottom drawer, allows me to stuff many plastic bags out-of-sight, with a handy little opening for when I need to use one – just like a tissue! If you’re displaying this Savvy distributor on a shelf, cover it in cute wrapping paper or construction paper to match your decor – and no one will know the difference.

New Year’s Resolution: Save Big on Baby Products

Did you know that most babies are born in September and August? According to BabyCenter.com, in 2010, the most births occurred in September followed by August. Well, that means soon-to-be parents are getting ready for the big day now. Babies are wonderful – they bring happiness and new meaning to our lives – and lots of expenses to our credit cards. Car seats, diapers, clothes, bottles, strollers – these are just a few of the essentials they must have, and the list is long. This is why parents need to be super savvy when it comes to buying for their kids to ensure that they’re getting safe products at the lowest possible price. [Read more...]

Tofu Lover

I love meat! A nice steak marinated in a concoction of Asian spices and American sauces is often the go-to dish for dinner parties and family meals. I love meat so much that I even eat steak as a snack at 2 AM, such that I have become fodder for meat jokes amongst family and friends.

That’s the old me! My New Year resolution is to cut back on red meat. There are many arguments for why one should eat less meat, but for me, it’s about eating holistically, saving the environment, and reducing my grocery expenses.

New Year’s Resolution: Eat-In More Often

One of the most popular resolutions each year, eating-in more often, requires some serious dedication – and inspiration!  As most people are bored by the prospect of cutting restaurant dining out of their expenses, a great replacement for this activity is hosting a monthly cooking night.  Amongst friends, alternate hosts, locations, and menus and simply split the expenses – you’ll be amazed to see how cheap a home-cooked meal can cost when divided communally.  Last week, a friend of mine made this mouthwatering meal for a few of us, and the cost came out to $4 per person – with leftovers to spare!  This recipe was inspired by the awesome cooking blog, Closet Cooking: Quinoa Fritters with Roasted Red Pepper and Toasted Walnut Pesto, Goat Cheese and a Poached Egg.

New Year’s Resolution: Make at Home – Save at the Store

One of my favorite snacks is granola. I eat it with soy milk, vanilla yogurt, mixed with cereal – and even by the handful.  It is such a nutritious snack and full of fiber, that it is a great alternative to a bag of chips or sugary cereal.  Unfortunately, my ambition to keep it part of my diet has seriously impacted my wallet because it can be so expensive! For a 12 oz bag of Bare Naked Granola I yield about 1 and ½ cups of granola at $4.84. If I’m lucky, I can make four servings out of one package. I decided to make my own granola at home, to see if it was more economical.

New Year’s Resolution: Documenting Memories from 2011

One way to ring in the New Year is to preserve some of the best memories from the past one. Here’s a cheap and fun way to frame your favorite photos, and add some cheery character to any room. As we all know, professional framing services tend to be fairly expensive, and often take a long time to complete. The last project I submitted for framing ended up costing over $150. Baffled by the cost, I came up with this inexpensive way to make my own frames – that cost me under $5 a piece!

New Year’s Resolution: Lose Weight!

Ah, the age-old resolution at the beginning of each new year: lose weight.  Ambitious to cut those holiday pounds, people aim to eat healthier and hit the gym more.  As more and more people pile into the gym, we wonder whether the membership fee is really worth it if you don’t get the access to the machines that you are paying for. Invest your time in some at-home exercises and cut the cost of a gym membership fee with this easy workout:

  • Cardio:  A key element to every workout, you need to warm up your muscles and raise your heart rate to keep your metabolism active all day. Run in place for 3 minutes – just do a gentle jog in place to get your heart rate up!
  • Tackle 25 Jumping Jacks – make sure to bend your knees when you land to lessen the impact!
  • Do 20 Crunches – lay on your back with your knees bent, hands behind your ears and pull yourself up using your abdominal muscles – make sure to breathe consistently through these!
  • Hip Bridge for 10 Seconds – In the same position, place your arms next to your body for support and thrust your hips into the air on an exhale. Hold this position for 10 seconds, using your gluteal (butt) muscles for support.  For added intensity, lift your toes off the ground so that only your heels are holding you.
  • 15 Jump squats – start in a squat position and jump straight into the air, thrusting your arms overhead.  Bend your knees for a soft landing back into the squat position, and immediately jump again.
  • Finish with 10 Pushups – Create a plank position with your body, legs hip-distance apart and palms pointing forward. For an easier execution, place knees on the ground and bend your legs upward – this will alleviate any strain on your back.

Repeat each step twice for an easy circuit workout in under 30 minutes.

With this routine, you can save yourself up to $80 per month on costly gym fees, and in the convenience of your own home – do it whenever you have the time!
